A beach, or strand, is a geological formation consisting of loose rock particles such as sand, gravel, shingle, pebbles, cobble, or even shell along the shoreline of a body of water. Some geologists consider a beach to be merely a shoreline feature of deposited material, but William Bascom (1980) has argued that a beach is the entire system of sand set in motion by waves to a depth of ten meters (30+ feet) or more off ocean coasts. Submerged, longshore bars are therefore also part of the beach, and thus beaches can be viewed as either: small systems in which the rock material moves onshore, offshore, or alongshore by the forces of waves and currents; or geological units of considerable size. There are several conspicuous parts to a beach, all of which relate to the processes that form and shape it. The part mostly above water (depending upon tide), and more or less actively influenced by the waves at some point in the tide, is termed the beach berm. The berm is the deposit of material comprising the active shoreline. The berm has a crest (top) and a face — the latter being the slope leading down towards the water from the crest. At the very bottom of the face, there may be a trough, and further seaward one or more longshore bars: slightly raised, underwater embankments formed where the waves first start to break The sand deposit may extend well inland from the berm crest, where there may be evidence of one or more older crests (the storm beach) resulting from very large storm waves and beyond the influence of the normal waves. At some point the influence of the waves (even storm waves) on the material comprising the beach stops, and if the particles are small enough (that is, are sand), winds shape the feature. Where wind is the force distributing the grains inland, the deposit behind the beach becomes a dune. The line between beach and dune is difficult to define in the field. Over any significant period of time, sand is always being exchanged between them. The drift line (the high point of material deposited by waves) is one potential demarcation. This would be the point at which significant wind movement of sand could occur, since the normal waves do not wet the sand beyond this area. However, the drift line is likely to move inland under assault by storm waves. Ein Strand ist ein flacher Küstenstreifen aus Sand oder Geröll. Ein Strand aus grobkörnigen bis feinem Sand in unterschiedlichen Farben wird als Sandstrand bezeichnet. Meistens sind die Strände bräunlich, weiße Sandstrände sind besonders gefragt. Daneben gibt es auch Strände aus schwarzem (auf Vulkan-Inseln) und (sehr selten) rosa Sand. Am Sandstrand findet das Leben der Sommerurlauber des Massentourismus statt. Sehr populär sind weiche weiße Sandstrände. Sie bieten vielfältige Möglichkeiten zur Entspannung und für Sport. Schwimmen, Sonnenbaden und Strandsport wie Beachvolleyball und Beachsoccer seien als Beispiel genannt. Das Barfußlaufen am Sandstrand fördert das Wohlbefinden und trägt dem Stressabbau bei. Eine der vielen Attraktionen, besonders für Kinder, ist der Bau von Sandburgen und anderer Konstrukte. Im deutschen Küstenort Timmendorfer Strand und in Sankt Peter-Ording finden regelmäßig Wettbewerbe und Meisterschaften im Sandburgenbau statt. Im Unterschied zu Stränden aus Kies oder Geröll (Steinstrand) gelten Sandstrände als wichtiges Merkmal für Urlaubsorte und Ferienhotels. In Reisekatalogen werden als Qualitätskriterium meistens die Länge und Breite, sowie die Entfernung zum Hotel angegeben. "Naturbelassener Strand" bedeutet zum Beispiel, dass dort der Sand nicht gesäubert wird. Der Sandstrand ist ein wichtiges Ansichtskarten- und Fotomotiv, besonders in der Werbung oft als Kulisse genutzt. Oft finden sich an Sandstränden auch Sanddünen. An der deutschen Nord- und Ostseeküste findet man die typischen Strandkörbe. Der Sandstrand an der Sylter Westküste ist mit fast 40 km der längste Strand an der deutschen Nordseeküste. La géomorphologie définit une plage comme une « accumulation sur le bord de mer de matériaux d'une taille allant des sables fins aux blocs ». La plage ne se limite donc pas aux étendues de sable fin ; on trouve également des plages de galets et, dans les cas des blocs les plus gros, des plages appelées beachrock. On a tendance à restreindre la plage à l'estran, mais elle comprend aussi l'avant-plage (aussi appelée avant-côte et où l'on trouve les avant-dunes, appelées dunes par les vacanciers), qui fait partie de la zone infra-littorale. Quoiqu'il en soit, les plages s'orientent perpendiculairement à la houle dominante. Les plages de sable fin sont les plus appréciées des vacanciers. On peut distinguer les sables « blancs » d'origine organique (restes squelettes et autres coquilles, calcaires ou siliceux) des sables « noirs » d'origine minérale ou volcanique. La distinction ne doit cependant pas se faire uniquement sur la couleur, des sables d'origine organiques pouvant apparaître noirs s’ils sont chargés en matières organiques, et des sables d'origine minérale pouvant être clairs, selon le type de roche qui leur a donné naissance. |
