Pigeons and doves comprise the family Columbidae within the order Columbiformes, including some 300 species of near passerine birds. In general parlance the terms "dove" and "pigeon" are used somewhat interchangeably. In ornithological practice there is a tendency for "dove" to be used for smaller species and "pigeon" for larger ones, but this is in no way consistently applied, and historically the common names for these birds involve much variation between "dove" and "pigeon".

Doves are kosher, and they are the only birds that may be used for a korban. Other kosher birds may be eaten, but not brought as a korban. In the New Testament a dove is the symbol of the Holy Spirit.

Les pigeons sont des oiseaux de la famille des Columbidae, vivant en plaine et dans les villes, et se nourrissant principalement de graines, mais avec un régime très élargi autour des lieux où les déchets alimentaires leur sont disponibles, ce qui les fait parfois qualifier d'éboueurs urbains.

Pesant en moyenne de 800 g à 1 kg, ces oiseaux appartiennent à plusieurs espèces. On les trouve dans tous les continents.

Le pigeon domestique est élevé principalement pour sa chair, mais aussi pour la colombophilie. C'est aussi un oiseau commensal des centres villes où l'on est obligé de limiter sa reproduction.
